Leading with Science and Engineering Practices

The 3D Science Instructional Framework outlines Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas as integral components for today's students to gain a comprehensive sense of how scientists build investigations in science. More often, many teachers create classrooms that focus on the memorization of Disciplinary Core Ideas without giving students opportunities to practice Science and Engineering Practices independently and collaboratively. This course provides science teachers with readily applicable instructional strategies that assist students in sensemaking in phenomena-driven science lessons. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to … 1. Better understand the alignment of the Science and Engineering Practices within the 3D Science Instructional Framework. 2. Illuminate the inner workings of the Science and Engineering Practices to your students through direct instruction and scaffolded activities. 3. Integrate assessments that address the ultimate aims of the 3D Science Instructional Framework by measuring student application of Science and Engineering Practices. 4. Find unit- and lesson-based strategies for incorporating SEP learning opportunities in an inquiry-based classroom.
