Jerome: Write from the Beginning: K-5 Narrative Writing Focus (1 credit)
This one-day workshop provides K-5 educators with a comprehensive overview of the Write From the Beginning program. Designed to equip teachers with practical, research-based instructional strategies, this course focuses on establishing a solid foundation for developmental writing across grade levels. Participants will explore the program's core methodology, which utilizes Thinking Maps® to help students structurally organize their thoughts, transition from oral language to written expression, and successfully master focused narrative writing. Through interactive modeling, collaborative analysis of student work samples, and guided lesson planning, teachers will learn how to immediately implement the program’s mini-lessons, rubric-based assessments, and criteria charts in their own classrooms.
Fields with asterisk are required.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Analyze and Apply K–5 Writing Rubrics: Deconstruct the core components of the developmental narrative rubrics to establish a deep understanding of grade-level expectations.
- Align Rubrics with State Standards: Map the program’s rubric criteria directly to specific state writing and language standards to ensure classroom instruction meets accountability requirements.
- Assess and Diagnose Student Writing Levels: Evaluate authentic student work samples to accurately identify a student's current developmental stage and specific areas of need on the rubric continuum. Collaborate with peers to norm the scoring of student writing, minimize grading bias, and achieve consistent, reliable alignment in student work evaluation across grade levels.
- Formulate Instructional Coaching Strategies: Design targeted intervention and coaching plans to effectively scaffold instruction and guide individual students from their current rubric placement to the next developmental level.
- Implement Sentence Boot Camp: Deliver the structured Sentence Boot Camp mini-lessons to systematically improve student sentence variety, complexity, and grammatical conventions in daily writing.
